Tick borne encephalitis
Disease and transmission – Tick borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection transmitted via the bite of an infected tick. The disease is present in parts of Asia, Europe and Siberia. The ticks are found in grasslands, forests, meadows and marshlands but can be found in most vegetative areas including parks and gardens.
Symptoms – The disease has 2 stages, the first is a mild flu like illness (fever, headache and aching muscles). The second much more serious and affects the brain and spinal cord.
Prevention – Following insect bite avoidance techniques and ensure early removal of ticks) to reduce risk. A vaccine is available and 3 doses are recommend to be given on days 0, 1-3 months and 5-12 months (there is an accelerated schedule).
Treatment – There is no treatment for TBE and only supportive management is available.
