Mumps

Disease and transmission –Mumps is a highly contagious viral infection spread in the air or surfaces and transferred into the nose and mouth.

Symptoms – High temperature, headache and joint pains but mumps is usually identified by painful swellings at the side of the face and under the ears. Complications include hearing loss or meningitis and swelling of the testicles or ovaries which can cause infertility. 

PreventionGood respiratory and hand hygiene may help prevent contracting the disease. There is a 2 dose vaccine given over a minimum of a month that gives lifelong immunity (also mixed with measles and rubella, the MMR vaccine)

Treatment – There is no treatment and only supportive care is available.
